The Orphanage - Projects Along the Way

Education is the key to hope for a different future for these children.

In the long run, we aspire to give them some skills that will open the doors to other opportunities.

The situation with public school in Mexico is such that the children are only required to attend through the sixth grade. After that children must pay for additional schooling.

The majority of unskilled workers in Tijuana tend to choose factory work, which pays very low wages. We fear that this just creates a vicious circle. As these children grow up we would hope to help them to support themselves and their future families.

Internet –

We have installed 2 computer stations with internet at the orphanage as of this past summer. The children are quickly learning computer/internet skills. They love it. We feel that by giving them access to the internet – we give them a skill set that improves their future employment.

Monthly costs for the internet are approximately $30.00 at this time. Ideally we will install at least 3 more computer stations in the future.

We are also actively searching for a teacher in the area that could come once a week to instruct the children.

Beauty School –

Currently, we have four teenaged girls at Rancho El Faro who have begun beauty school. This is a wonderful career opportunity for these young women.

The girls need supplies. Thankfully, with the support of some local entertainment industry friends, we have been able to collect some of these.

There is also tuition costs involved.

Learning English –

This is a work in progress. Your suggestions are welcome and wanted.

Currently, George from Corazon de Vida has built a schoolroom for the children to do homework in after school – it is small but such an improvement for the children as they now have work tables, a white board, books that were donated…

Hopefully, we will be able to employ a part-time teacher in the near future to come and help the children specifically with learning English a few hours a week.
